This glass sculpture takes the Anyue Stone Carvings as its spiritual origin, employing the transparency, fluidity and chromatic tension of contemporary glass art to reconstruct the poetic realm where millennia-old Buddhist sculptures coexist with landscapes and human culture. Through dialogue between tradition and modernity, it awakens the spiritual resonance of cultural heritage.

I. Transcription of Cultural Genes: From ‘Cave-Lined Mountains’ to ‘Glazed Layered Ridges’

The Anyue Stone Carvings represent the pinnacle of Sichuan-Chongqing cave art, their core allure lying in the spatial philosophy of ‘unity between heaven and humanity’—Buddhist caves embedded within verdant peaks, where rock walls serve as paper and chisel marks as ink, inscribing faith into the very fabric of the earth. The work precisely translates this faith through the formal language of layered mountains.
The mountain folds within the piece represent both the geological texture of natural weathering and the chiselling traces of stone carvers who ‘used chisels as brushes.’ This transforms the primal craftsmanship of ‘carving mountains into Buddhas’ into the rhythmic cadence of hand-carved crystal glass reliefs.
The faintly discernible Buddha figure at the centre conveys the solemn aura of a statue weathered by natural forces. Yet within the translucency of the crystal glass, the tangible ‘distance’ of a physical statue dissolves, allowing the Buddha to transform from an ‘icon for human veneration’ into ‘part of the spiritual essence of the landscape.’ This subtly echoes the Zen core principle that ‘all beings possess Buddha-nature; every mountain and stream is a place of practice.’

II. Zen Dialogue of Material and Light: Crystal Glass as Medium, Light and Colour as Zen Expression
The transparency, colour gradients, and interplay of light and shadow in crystal glass serve as a ‘Zen medium’ bridging past and present. The gradient from verdant green to deep blue draws inspiration from the lush forests and tranquil twilight of Anyue Mountain, resonating with the imagery of traditional Chinese ‘blue-green landscape painting’—using nature's hues to connect the cave temple with the rhythms of heaven and earth. As light permeates the layered glass, hues blend and illusions intertwine, evoking the hazy radiance of dawn mist enveloping the caves. The dialectical coexistence of the glass's ‘emptiness’ (translucent quality) and “colour” (cool green-blue tones) interprets Buddhism's ultimate philosophical insight: ‘emptiness is form, form is emptiness.’ As light and shadow flow across curved surfaces, the mountain forms and Buddha silhouettes continuously shift, endowing the static sculpture with ‘an instant that is eternity’— evoking the profound tranquillity distilled by millennia of wind and rain upon Anyue's stone carvings.
This work ultimately employs crystal glass as its brush and light as its ink, rewriting the narrative of Anyue's ‘Buddhist realm amidst mountains and waters’ within a contemporary context. Within the transparent poetry of glass, ancient faith sprouts a spiritual vitality that reaches towards the future.

  • Q: Are the numerous bubbles present in your products considered defects?
    A:

Actually, it's quite normal for glass artworks to contain bubbles. This is due to our use of the lost-wax casting technique, which naturally results in the presence of bubbles within the pieces. The way light refracts through these internal bubbles showcases the unique charm of the glass material. It beautifully illustrates that glass truly serves as a vessel for light.
